Proyectos Impala / Art Gallery
A mobile contemporary art gallery and library in Ciudad Juárez, México, as a reflection of the urban landscape
Proyectos Impala is an exhibition space and library specialized in contemporary art in Ciudad Juárez. Impala works with international artists and curators to amass a cutting edge library to provide an important reference for our geographically isolated communities and is a natural catalyst and gathering place for young artists to come together to meet.
The gallery is a recuperated trailer container. Alejandro Morales, curator of Impala teamed with Urbánika architects for the project. Strategies were developed, like restoring the original wood flooring, adding insulation and new walls, plus openings for natural light entrance and ventilation. The program is rounded with a small lounge and reading area.
Impala travels around the city, reaching communities and spaces that don’t have access to art; it is an extension of a conversation, strengthening the bonds of the artistic community beyond violence and its aftermath and towards a more balanced partnership of rebuilding and supporting infrastructure of contemporary art that has presence on both sides of our border (Ciudad Juárez – El Paso, Tx). Impala has featured exhibitions by Francis Alÿs, Julio Cesar Morales, Miriam Salado, y Kurt Hollander.
