Design proposal for the idea competition ARKXSITE - Dwelling (Honorable Mention)
The project, buried in the cliff, seeks to disappear while emphasizing the extraordinary landscape and nature around it.
The four elementary human activities - eating, resting, bathing and sleeping - take place in separate branches of a cross, a shape that allows them to reinvent themselves, each one having a very specific linkage with the four elements of the landscape - the ocean, the cliff, the bay, the cave.
At the center of the cross, a fire burns. In the french language, the word “foyer” means the home, but at the same time, it signifies the center and the fireplace. What could be the fifth function of the dwelling, in fact unifies them all. Inside the shelter, the human being is able to live for a few days, to discover a new way of living, protected by the rock.
The smoke emitted by the flames escapes through the chimney, an element that seems to be part of the ruin above. From the sky, we can still perceive the cross, oriented at 45° to the cardinal points, themselves signaled by the chapel. Adjoining the ocean, we can read it as a wind rose metaphor.
