Galeria in Eixample
The classic typology of the Eixample buildings often included a balcony in its interior façade, which most of the times was left wide open. This space was generally used as a place to hang clothes to dry. At some point, people started closing up this spaces with windows, often cheap ones, maintaining its use of a service area.
This intervention changes that conception, turning this space into a core of the house, if somewhat off-centred. A place to be, instead of a space to hide.
The composition of eight tall and narrow windows and its two-toned wooden materiality recall the best constructed traditional galleries.
Its distinguishable character is given by a winding pattern in the lower part, almost imperceptible from the outside, that creates a dynamic atmosphere of movements on the interior as the windows are opened or shut.
A bench on the bottom is also a shelf. The ensemble of windows and furniture sets its character. It is not only a limit, the frontier between interior and exterior, but a catalyst for life and activity.
