The flat of 149 m2, had the typical layout of the Ensanche district in Barcelona, that extends from the façade to the street to the other one of the interior courtyard, and comprised more spacious rooms at one end and a block of smaller ones distributed along a long corridor. As a peculiarity it could be highlighted the pre-existing fireplace that was found in an adjacent room to the kitchen.
The brief that we received from the client , a young girl, was to get fewer rooms and maximum usage of natural lighting. For this reason, the decision that was taken was to remove as much as possible the partition walls and the corridor distribution, so that a chained sequence of spaces with different usages could be generated. The limit between these uses is determined by changes in the pavement level and in the false ceilings or apertures in the load- bearing walls. This strategy permits wide visual diagonals without losing the comfort of the well dimensioned spaces.
The entrance hall and the kitchen are placed in the central core of the flat.. The windows of two of the interior courtyards, that before had a merely functional character, now configure two new interior façades.
At the end that looks to the inner courtyard are placed the living room and dining room. The fireplace was intentionally emphasized by moving it and integrating it into the new interior topography, so that in this way it´s understood as a crucial interconnecting element.
All the bedrooms and bathrooms are located at the other end, looking to Girona Street. Due to the peculiar condition of the client, these ones are conceived as two large spaces that at a certain future moment can be divided into 4 individual spaces. So this zone of the house can be interpreted as a suite bedroom with a bathroom, a guest room and a complimentary bathroom, or a large principal bedroom with a large bathroom.
