Courtyard Apartment in Lapa
This ground floor apartment, located in a late XIX century building, had suffered some changes but kept its original layout, which is outdated to nowadays standards. Its generous courtyard was contaminated with add-ons that devalued it and made the inside darker.
Light was returned to the house by regaining the courtyard and making it a livable space and an extension of the living room, through its flowerbeds, bench and deck pavement.
The compartmentalized interior with an extensive circulation area was reorganized so that the bathrooms, closet and pantry would now form a central interior core, allowing for the main spaces to benefit from natural light. The bedrooms are kept in the main façade, elevated from the street, and along the rear façade, having a privileged relation with the courtyard, are the living room and kitchen open space.
There was an effort to maintain the formal and constructive characteristics in the spaces that had no changes, and a stylized version of those same characteristics in the remainder spaces.
