Brenaz 100
Extension and transformation of a prison in Geneva, Switzerland
The aim of the project was to remodel the existing building (Etablissement fermé "La Brenaz") which can host up to 68 cells, while adding a whole new building which could host 100 more cells, administration and visitor areas, as well as logisitic and work (occupation) area.
The project develops itself around large inner courtyards, allowing the prisoners to go out without allowing direct communication with the "outside".
Numerous studies and simulations have led to develop a "model" cell, in particular regarding the details of the windows (size, format and position, passive solar protection, access to natural lighting and ventilation).
The building is made of a concrete structure, cladded with extra-white profiled glass. A translucent thermal insulation has been used between the elements to allow a lot of light in the circulations and occupational areas.
