The Great Gig in the Sky
Bons Sons 2016, 1st prize | Cem Soldos, Portugal
The aim of the competition was the construction of an ephemeral installation for the portuguese music festival "Bons Sons ’16" in Cem Soldos (Tomar).
Inspired by the theme of the threshing floor, we aim to create our personal “Eira”, a gathering area, that, instead of soil, becomes ceiling, covering and protecting the space to allow Bons Sons visitors to guard against the sun, to meet, to socialize.
Related to the local agricultural tradition, our surface is made by a net which is supported by balloons inflated with helium.
The result is a floating roof, that allows to keep the space below at the same time shaded, and fluid and permeable, in order to guarantee a large number of possible uses.
The key feature of the pavilion is the interactivity, its will to grow and be modified by the users: at the entrance of the event every visitor could inflate a smaller balloon and release it below the net: the balloon will alter the shape of the net, inflating it more and more as well as the performing event goes on. This will also allow to have an ever-changing space during the four nights of the festival.
