Il Palazzo Hotel

Il Palazzo hotel was one of the first boutique hotels in Japan and was designed in collaboration with Aldo Rossi to be a destination building for the Japanese southern port city of Fukuoka. Set at the edge of a canal, its monumental facade is composed of a series of stacked amber-colored Iranian travertine columns and chemically aged copper lintels. The seven-story facade bridges western and eastern architectural influences. The 62-room hotel block sits atop a stepped stone base, which provides for a public piazza in front of the main entry to the hotel. A restaurant, and disco inhabit the primary volume of the building and four special bars are located in the flanking buildings. The project has won numerous design awards worldwide, including an AIA Honor award.
