Altes Museum, Berlin, Germany
On the floor that now houses the Antikensammlung at Schinkels Altes Museum there used to be two rows of columns that marked the space and ordered up the free display of the sculptures.
The 1966 DDRs reconstruction eliminated the columns and broke up the huge space of the Nordgalerie with a staircase. It also modified doors proportions and positions.
Our project for the new Antikensammlung exhibition eliminated the stairway of the Nordgalerie and went back to the positions and proportions of the Schinkels doors. Additionally, it introduced abstract, mid-height pillars, a memory of the eliminated columns and tidied up the works on display.
This double row of pillars built up a kind of central mall, along which the highlight works were exhibited, while the side aisles host reference and context works.
