The client had a small budget and loves unique atmospheres, so we tried to maximize this idea. The result is a house with a high rockabilly / garage attitude.
The annexe of this house was in poor condition and was demolished. Although the house became smaller, it feels much more spacious than before. The garden area has been greatly enhanced by the demolition, and by organizing the ground level very openly, there has been created a very airy living level.
The ground floor has the atmosphere of a garage or workshop. The materials and decor give the impression that the building has always looked this way. The open ground level is subtly partitioned into separate zones. Between the entrance and the kitchen area a large wooden cabinet was built, where the cloakroom, toilet, kitchen, storage room, etc were provided. The kitchen itself is a few steps higher than the rest of the space.
The rear facade has been completely opened on the ground level and it has been replaced by a large sectional. This reinforces the garage atmosphere, and when opened the intimate space is suddenly very open and airy, and it seems like you're sitting in the garden.
On the street side a void was made to the sitting area on the first floor. Here a new staircase made of rusted steel was positioned. The old staircase was removed and a glass plate was laid on top of the stairwell. The ceilings were painted black, and all techniques were placed in a way they become visible. The colors of the different pipes, and the drawings they make on the ceiling, again reinforce the garage atmosphere.
On the first floor the sitting area and the bathroom were remodeled. The bathroom was built entirely in black on one side, on the other side in white polyester.
In the garden, a covered terrace was built. This construction was given a simple shape, reminiscent of the construction of a gas station. By building it this way the atmosphere of the house also continued in the garden, and by its position the covered terrace also defines the entire garden area.
To represent this project pictures reminiscent of the Pirelli calendars were taken. The photos emphasize the atmosphere of the project and don't just focus on the architecture but also the people in the building. The set of a calendar was created, making the circle complete.
Rock on!
