The house is only 5.5 x 5.5 m. It has a generous 1.8-m-wide veranda, or engawa, that wraps the main volume on all four sides. Private rooms are in the basement. The ground floor, raised 2 m above street level, houses a living room and open kitchen. This volume has large windows on all sides, directing occupants' attention outwards. A timber column in the middle of the room anchors the space. Igarashi left the structural elements-posts, beams, bracing and so forth-fully exposed. He describes his goal for this design as ‘a somewhat strange and new architecture’.
