ST Residence
The steep flank of the mountain poses a challenge as well as an advantage. The small building makes use of the rugged terrain to create different outdoor areas on each floor and, in return, to bring the outdoors into the house in different ways.
Cars drive up under the house, where the elevator starts from the lowest level, namely outdoors, as the sole connection between the floors. The next floor is for everyday living with access to the garden. The top floor is intended as a roof garden or conservatory and provides a small bridge to the natural terrain with its fruit trees; the terrain is already 7.5 m higher here.
The building with an L-shaped floor plan creates an intimate space with a southwest exposure under the fruit trees overhanging the slope.
In a technical sense the design picks up on a building form that is typical of Tyrol, at least in historic examples: a compact structure cantilevered over massive walls or boulders in steep terrain to create free areas under the building.
