Asia Museum of Modern Art

Taipei based New Zealand architectural photographer Lucas K. Doolan has recently revisited The Asian Museum of Modern Art by Tadao Ando (completed in 2013) with a series of black and white photographs.
These new images of the museum intend to articulate and put forward the architect’s formal strategy of triangles as well as documenting the current conditions and people relationships of the museum with its surrounding context. The triangular stacking forms create overlapping spaces between exhibition spaces, and are therefore able to generate incidental visual interactions between spaces, people and artworks.
Ando’s articulation of the triangular form is visible within architectural detailing such as the use of triangular tiles, lighting patterns, exhibition stands and the V shaped structures repeating at the building edge. Experientially there are constant reminders of the persistence of triangles throughout the museum, observing changing formalities of the triangular form between light and shadows throughout the day.
