Château de paille
Château de paille is a straw cabin built in the french Alps in summer 2016.
This shelter was part of the "Festival des cabanes" competition, taking place in Faverges, Haute-Savoie, during summer 2016. Among twelve other sites, this one was simply a straw field, facing a small alpine village and its tiny chapel.
We imagined a pile of straw as the only built presence in the field. A type of construction everyone has experimented at least once in a life. It's a vernacular shape full of sensations, with the smell of the straw, the soft and itchy contact on the skin, the golden colours shining under the sun and the felted noise among the bales. Collective imagination is also wide, from the rest in the hay to the children's games or the Three Little Pigs first house.
Thus we decided to create the pile of straw and to dig inside, in order to host all these experiences.
