Invited to Biennale Architettura 2016 curated by Alejandro Aravena, Raphael Zuber shows 4 of his latest projects in Giardini. Each of these projects is represented by a rendered animation and an ideographic model. The animations are projected in format 6.5 x 2.8 m and give the sensation of experiencing architectonical space. The models, almost miniatures in size, are covered in gold leaf and are physical expressions of ideas. Together, these two very different representations create a complex reality of a potentially built architecture.
A white element hanging from one of the walls balances the spatial composition.
"Building is becoming increasingly complicated. Architects are required to deal with an accumulation of progressively difficult problems. As a consequence, S P A C E, which is at the core of our discipline is often forgotten, ignored or simply lost.
I am convinced that space, in all its complexity, has a fundamental impact on all facets of our consciousness and wellbeing.
Spatial qualities are not precisely measurable, but there are reasons why we like or dislike something. What we experience with our senses we test with our intellect. What we trust intuitively we clarify with abstraction. Our judgement is always based in personal conviction, but there are, for sure, also archetypal spatial conditions that almost imperceptibly touch our basic instincts and influence our daily lives.
I therefore propose, without ignoring the obvious social problems of today, to concentrate on architectural space, to think what great spaces could be and how we could create and build them. Our work is an appeal to give meaning and importance to space." Raphael Zuber
