The Citizen's refuge
Provocative project of Parade square in Warsaw
Parade Square, even though it is actually open towards the surrounding, in reality lives in a condition of isolation, confined in its area and surrounded by a barrier of buildings. It is treated with the same indifference of a monument that once was significant, but now it is too old to adapt to the new times. This is why the new urban plan of the area incorporates Parade Square into the newest image of a city, completely ignoring what it has meant for Warsaw, and can continue to represent.
But what are we, if we do not respect our history?
For this, instead of finding an alternative solution on how to force integration between the square and the city, which evidently doesn't depend only from the study of the square, with this project, it was decided to emphasize his isolation, turning it into a point of strength. The square is then transformed into an included area, inside the archetype of the wall, which maintains and emphasizes its monumentality and its functions, and creates situations that were not present in this urban area, remarking the importance that has to preserve the past, in future cities. In this area you must feel protected, close to the heart of Warsaw, free to express yourself, to receive knowledge of the institutions within it, and also do party, if necessary, without feeling the hustle and the anxiety of modern speed . Inside the walls it then creates a refuge/park that highlight the relationship and the importance of the square and its buildings acquiring a sort of untouchability, but that can also be used for exhibitions, concerts, expo pavilions. The city that adapts to the needs of the citizen, not the citizen that adapts the needs of the city.
