East 78th Street Townhouse
This project involves a complete gut renovation of an existing 4-story townhouse, along with the addition of a fifth floor and a 12-foot rear extension. Our clients, who had previously lived in a downtown loft, sought to recreate a similar open and airy feel for their new Upper East Side townhouse. In response, we designed a vertical loft that offers a dynamic, modern living experience, contrasting with the traditional horizontal layout they were accustomed to.
The vertical loft features interconnected rooms that seamlessly flow into one another, with sliding panels providing privacy when needed. The design emphasizes connectivity, with an open staircase linking the various levels. To reinforce the loft concept, we minimized full-height walls, enhancing the sense of openness throughout.
A standout feature of the design is the rear wall, made up of a glass curtain wall that overlooks the garden. This design choice allows the living spaces to merge effortlessly with the outdoors. On the ground floor, the glass wall lifts completely, transforming the space and creating a seamless connection between the interior and garden, resulting in a unified living area.
