UNFINISHED - Competition
Spain Pavillion - XV Biennale di Venezia - "Reporting from the front"
The theme of the Spanish Pavilion for the Venice Biennale of Architecture is The Unfinished, Adaptable without permanences.
Our time faces every day a huge contradiction: from a side there is always a greater number of structures and building abandoned and not finished because of the great economic and politic crisis we are passing through, on the other side there is the need of space of millions of people who are leaving their homeland in search of peace and freedom in European countries but the lack of places to accommodate these people is often presented as one of the hardest problem to solve.
Our project defines a particular strategy to bring together these two different realities attempting to respond to both of them trough the design synthesis.
The greater weakness of every occidental hosting strategy is that the hosting structures provides rigid and hyper-planned places where there is no chance to create an own identity for the community.
In our proposal the Unfinished becomes a stage where, thanks to the freedom that gives its condition of extreme adaptability, the community can develop its real identity.
Several analysis at Calais camp for migrant on how it became a town identify five clear fundamental aspect of any community : Shelter, Sociality, Trading, Religion and Education.
Like John Hejduk, in his “Mask of Medusa”, imagines not permanent masks arriving in the city through long wanderings, generating unexpected urban transformations that will survive even when the masks will leave the city, our proposal imagines moving archetypes of the the fundamental aspects that let the people develop their own different visions of these functions giving a new and unique identity to such heterogenous community.
