Elizabeth Quay Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridge
The jewel in the crown of the new Elizabeth Quay precinct is its graceful dual-arched pedestrian and cyclist bridge. A striking engineering feat, the 22m high cable-stayed bridge spans the inlet, visually links city and water and offers impressive 360 degree views across the Swan River and the Perth CBD.
Lead design consultants for the bridge, Arup, delivered a design which is everything the client sought to achieve and satisfied the objectives of simple and pure structural forms, complemented by a rationalised modular architecture to the fascia finishes, balustrading and timber decking. The architect’s unique sculptured form for the cable-stayed bridge presented an interesting design challenge and the structural solution overcame every technical challenge whilst ensuring the bridge’s visual appeal was at the forefront of the design. Shaped by diverse and innovative design influences, the final form is considered to be more a unique, trafficable sculpture, than a typical pedestrian bridge.
