Located in a 1930’s historic house within the typical Shanghain li-nong (alley) neighborhood, the original architecture combined the stream-lined modernist aesthetics with a few nostalgic details and the un-expectingly large garden, surprising the visitors upon entering the front gate.
The renovation sought to keep the original material and details such as the plaster ceiling molding and wrought-iron glass door panels. One of the most crucial aspects of the new design is to reglaze an alley-facing window with a single sheet of frosted glass. Emitting light late at night, the window communicates to the outside world the life of the new occupants–the architects who never stop working.
