CREMATORIUM ON THE CANAL
Chapel; Waiting Room; Facilities; Cremator; Garden; Waterway Access.
Area: 10.000 mq
Gross Floor Area: 580 mq
The building is positioned where the cemetery road stops and the quay along the canal transforms into a sinuous and irregular line.
The simple and elementary form of the crematorium recalls that of the buildings downstream and is intended to convey a feeling of calm familiarity.
The building is divided into two blocks: one dedicated to the relatives of the deceased with reception services and a farewell room; the other housing the technical areas for the cremation process and collection of ashes.
The two parts are connected by a small square courtyard with a tall cypress at the center, a sort of ortus conclusus dedicated to rest and meditation.
The interior of the farewell room is characterized by wide planks of rough wood. The view of the pine forest, canal and the industrial landscape in the distance through long narrow windows seeks to convey the idea of seamless continuity with life.
The entrance is identified by an overhang tangential to the main façade: on this directional, connecting with the bank of the canal, a covered wooden bridge and an adjacent fountain in the form of a house from whose windows that water flows signal an approach from the canal
