Light Vegetable Garden
A large, beautiful and mysterious object which houses artificial vegetation that emits light and gently sways due to the heat of the candles in a critical reflection on industrialized farming systems and massive use of plastic containers used in packaging built the past November in Olot during a light festival Lluernia.
The work suggests a contemporary reinterpretation of the "Hortus Conclusus" as a large greenhouse where fruits and vegetables have been replaced by the plastic containers that contain them in a deep critical reflection on industrialized farming systems and massive use of plastic containers used in packaging. A use equivalent to 1,000 trays per person per year, which is the same number that we use in the intervention.
The proposed land for the intervention is a great urban space with different levels that lets us observe the installation from different points of view, and in this sense we have an accurate study of the space in order to decide what the correct scale for the project would be.
We build a 6x6x6m cube with a very thin structure of 40x20mm galvanized pipes, and we cover it with a plastic sheet, usually used for greenhouses.
Inside the cube we hang 500 trays and place 500 on the ground with a candle in each one.
The cube is floating 70cm over the ground with the help of the arm of a crane truck.
The result is a large, beautiful and mysterious object at an urban scale, which houses artificial vegetation that emits light and gently sways due to the heat of the candles.
An object that produces attraction and fascination to anyone that approaches and forces him to stay and contemplate it during a long time, absorbed in its beautiful artificial nature.
An intervention that converts fire into light, with only the help of candles and trays, also enables us to explore the control of light as a material in the search of beauty.
