Álora de CERCA
Architecture competition for the intervention on public spaces in the Castle of Álora historical suburb (Malaga)
Álora, known as the ancient Roman site “Iluro”, found the conditions to settle definitely in the hill “Cerro de las Torres”. It provides a prominent position on the Guadalhorce valley, a bridge between the Costa del Sol and the interior of the province of Malaga. In this fertile orchard, that enjoys a rich historical and natural heritage, Álora stands dominating the landscape, becoming the benchmark of the motor development of nearby populations.
The project addresses the need to condition the ancient suburb surrounding the castle. The aim is to enhance the features that define the identity of the place, looking for the deep roots of his long and varied history. The old Bailey, that used to protect the city, becomes the main axis of an extensive tour of viewpoints and singular spots where natural places, extensive farmland and an important archaeological heritage converge. The construction of this walk discovers the archaeological remains of the hidden and significant castle wall.
The proposal understands the walk as a resource that is able to build a relationship between landscape and history, while the chronological time is understood as a constructive material. The project works the small and large scale and it recovers traditional materials and construction elements in order to update and reinterpret the identity.
The entire project is solved with a single material. The local stone is used to run pavements, walls and cambers. Moreover, this solution creates an unitary image and works with the raw material of the valley. Lastly, as usual, Álora is made of Álora.
