Adobe Houses
Tha Song Yang is a Thai town at the Moei River, which defines the border between Thailand and Myanmar. We first visited the town in early 2015 to look at a potential project near the town center. The project was very challenging due to the unconventional size of the property of 6.00m by 22.00m, and the requested program by the client.
The client wanted to use mainly natural materials. Adobe bricks for the walls, second hand timber from their previous demolished wooden house as roof structure and hand pressed cement roof tiles from a nearby local factory.
The front of the building, which faces a relatively narrow road, should accommodate a coffee shop and a parking space for the owner’s car, while the middle part of the building will be used as a massage room. The owner’s private living area is located at the rear section of the house.
The use of adobe bricks ensures that the temperature stays cool during the hot season while during the cold season the thickness of the wall functions as natural insulation and keep the coller temperatures outside.
