Priego-Lagares House
Built on a very elongated plot in a quiet residential area at the base of Sierra Morena, Priego+Lagares house is a combination of different typologies that formally articulate various yards and patios to create a very rich interior. Responding to the necessary privacy of Southern cultures of living, the house negates the exterior street by a great blind curved wall while opens up to its interior.
Priego-Lagares house design needs to articulate a plurality of forms of life. A heterogeneous crowd formed by a couple in their late forties, a single in his fifties, a teenager, a child, a baby, a dog and an elderly person, need to find their way to live together. As a consequence, the design is not only based on one particular housing typology, but on a conglomeration of typologies which also imply different socio-spatial relations: the pavilion on the garden (living), the small shed in the countryside (reproduction), the block of the modern villa (individual resting), the patio-house (traditional communal intimacy). These typologies have been combined in a multi-typological proposal, where each of them defines a specific articulation of human relations framed by their particular formal display.
The dining pavilion floats over the garden demonstrating a total openness to it. Its evasive façade, coming from its rhomboidal geometry, incorporates the garden into the house and the house into the garden. The small rural shed for the kitchen is grounded on the earth, and its tilted roof expresses its organic ground-sky relationship. The modern block accommodates resting spaces, separating the inhabitant’s individuality by a mechanical serialization of its rooms through a corridor. The block is separated from the outside by a narrow patio enclosed by a blind curvilinear wall, creating a space that manages and distributes light, ventilation and circulation. This narrow patio detaches the house from the exterior, generating its own internal environment.
The juxtaposition of these different and conflicting typologies generates a zone of indeterminacy in between areas whose limits and relations are clear and established. This overlapping of different typologies, or forms of relation, to a level of indeterminacy guarantees the free performance of the individuals within the limits, framings and articulations that make living together possible.
