ENLIGHTENMENT
“ENLIGHTENMENT” was installed in November 2013 at the ruined houses at the Ghetto of Warsaw, Poland.
The ruined houses at the Ghetto of Warsaw stand empty. Their silent presence tells the story of a community that was demolished.
Our project is a site specific installation which commemorates the heritage of Warsaw's Jewish community. An urban guerrilla action of lighting Hanukkiya candles at the windows of the Ghetto's ruins during the Jewish Holiday of Hanukkah (celebrated this year from 27th of November until the 5th of December).
This action serves as a visual and spiritual reminder for these houses' past inhabitants and tells the story of the community that had once lived and flourished there.
The Hanukkah holiday commemorates the Jewish up rise against Greek oppressors during the 2nd century B.C. According to tradition, during this holiday Jews light up candles of a Hanukkiya and display them in a window as a reminder for these events.
