House extension in Gent. Belgium
The existing construction is demolished and replaced by an open space under a new gable roof. The ridge pole, designed as an over-scaled, lightweight girder, follows the subdivision of the main building. It spatially suggests two zones: a narrow functional strip, and a free zone next to it.
A bite from the roof makes room for an existing window in the rear façade of the old building and throws light into the deepest point of the construction. On the garden side the roof extends into a canopy, which shelters the terrace and south-west oriented façade. The folding window can be opened entirely and the fixed window profiles are hidden behind the structure, which allows the space to extend into the garden.
