San Remo House
This project is a private residence located in San Remo, a small town situated on the edge of the Western Port in southern Victoria. The project is sited on a piece of farmland adjacent to the busy Phillip Island Rd. The building is sited high up on a crest, which slopes quickly down to the edge
of the Western Port bay. This provides the project with magnificent views across the bay toward Phillip Island and the distant French Island.
The project responds to its agricultural context through reference, echoing the numerous corrugated iron sheds, hay stores and cattle shelters, which line the journey from Melbourne to the Island.
The projects simple square plan is split in three sections. A bedroom wing sheltered from the busy road by a small concrete retaining wall, a Kitchen, Dining room and verandah, which frames the view toward Churchill Island and a Living room which frames the view toward the distant Phillip Island.
Externally, the project is read as a simple rural structure, yet internally the floor plan creates a complex arrangement of rooms, each with its own unique connection to the surrounding landscape.
