Bauhaus Museum Dessau Competition
The new building for the Bauhaus Museum in Dessau appears as a long transparent pavilion deeply related to the city park thanks to an hypogeum exhibition space, instead the rebuilding of a massive block in the park corner. The long pavilion rises from the ground, which is particularly effective in this context in order to emphasize the symbiosis between city, architecture and landscape.
The part of the new Museum that rises from the ground is about 120.00 m long, 12.60 m wide, 6.00 m high. The structure, realized in tensioned concrete, is composed of a beam roof, placed on four supports at the corners and suspended over the double height space of the foyer placed below. The pavilion is a transparent space designed to welcome the visitor, a symbolic cultural bridge that gradually reveals the wealth of the underground world of which it is device of access.
At level, 0.00 are placed the two main entrances to the exhibition area, the enquiry area, the dedicated entrance to the objects’ delivery hall, the offices and the cafeteria.
All the main functions both exhibition and educational are placed at – 6.50 m level: the foyer is lighted from above and distributes to the ticketing area, the museum shop, the exhibition spaces (Temporary and Collection Presentation) and to the educational spaces (workshops and events).
A lowered patio allows to light up the workshop area.
The cafeteria, the events area and the Museum Educational Section are directly related with exterior spaces to enable activities to spread out. From the terrace of the cafeteria people can appreciate the Hauptpost historical building, that arises just in front of them. The educational area of the Museum can be used separately for events after hours, thanks to a dedicated entrance in the lowered patio.
