The smart Dock 1 lab, as part of the New Lab innovation facility in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, offers a variety of interdisciplinary learning process as well as collaborative spaces.
The idea is to break the horizontal gesture of the on-going project by inserting a giant programmatic wall and a void within the given boundaries. The interface of the wall is a twofold: it allows on one side a distribution of dedicated areas and on the other side a possible extension thanks to two mobile platforms that can slide along the boundaries providing different spatial configurations.
Thus, the wall can unfold or open-up according to the needs of the users when the platform stops. The fact that a part of the project is left to the uncertainty can lead to a new way of consuming space in an unexpected manner. Thus, the functions can be shift to communicate, expend or be renewed.
