Conversion of Felgueroso Cinema Into Audiovisual Centre
Designed by the architect Juan José Suárez Aller in 1954, Felgueroso cinema is an outstanding example of the modernism in Asturias. Situated in the centre of Sama de Langreo, it is an imposing building of elliptical shape conceived as the finishing touch to the group of apartment blocks surrounding it in a U-shape. A porch filters the entrance to the garden surrounding the building.
It is a building of strong significance and value, with all windowless sides except for the main facade with leaning glass through which one can see the lobby and staircase. It is capped by a mural which was restored during building works, an original creation of the painters Antonio Suárez y Jesús Díaz, Zuco.
In addition to style considerations, our contribution involves understanding architecture as an ever changing and evolving process in a city
The new layout is much more complex than de original which only had a projection room. IN the new design the interior space still has a projection room. In the new design the interior space still has a projection room but additionally includes an audiovisual centre, a multi-use room, exhibition areas and offices on the upper floors.
The facade, lobby and staircase have been restored, and the rest of the building is presented in a contemporary fashion to create a type of architecture that differs from the original in the treatment of lighting and dimension. Zenithal light is introduced, creating a mood associated with the world of cinema and results in a more intense diverse use the building
These days cinemas (beautiful buildings that we still remember) have disappeared from our city centres and have relocated to impersonal parks on the outskirts. The rescue of this building delivers increased heritage and cultural value that recaptures the memories of generations of children that let their imagination fly away in the Felgueroso Cinema in Langreo
