Umbau Haus Lendenmann
Sculptural construction behind a historic backdrop in Regensberg
House Lendenmann is in the historical part of Regensberg: a two-storey half-timbered building on the southern slopes of the lower castle.
The historic center of Regensberg, consisting of the annular upper castle which goes back to the city founded in 1244, together with the adjacent Unterburg are under cantonal townscape protection. With its unique location on the eastern foothills of the Jura Mountains, Regensberg also enjoys spectacular views of the surrounding Zürcher Unterland up to the Alpine massif.
The poor state of the building, due to various structural damage and numerous improper conversions, no longer allowed to a smooth conversion. In close cooperation with the municipality and the townscape protection, it was finally decided the partial demolition of the old building and the new construction in the volume. Behind a historic backdrop, a multi-family house with 3 apartments was realized.
The 3 apartments are designed in the tension between two completely different sides of the building. The north side with filigree truss and lattice windows is a valuable component of the historic town. It contrasts with the generous south side, which has through the hillside over an additional floor and a breathtaking view. Meanwhile, these contrasts a create a dynamic interplay of proportion, light and materiality.
In the facades, the contrast between old and new is clearly demonstrated.
A fireplace for guiding light in the attic, a cantilevered bay window and sliding doors interpret vernacular elements and re-structure the outer skin. The semi-transparent wood sheathing was prevalent as in the rural construction culture with regional ornaments which were milled at irregular compressions. The new facade dissolves into a delicate dress that provides the interior and exterior spaces, a subtlety of light and shadow.
