Extension to the Academy of Fine Arts. Nürnberg
The elongated, single-storey building flanking the street is complementing and extending the architecture of the existing listed buildings designed by Sep Ruf.
The new ateliers, studio and seminar rooms are contained in three separate pavilions united by a single large roofscape. The centre of the new complex is the so-called ‘communication pavilion’ with a cafeteria, large studio, picture storeroom and multi-purpose space for events. An open courtyard adjoining the café serves as the main entrance to the academy site. The western pavilion houses new ateliers grouped around an internal courtyard and connected to one another by covered walkways. The seminar rooms in the third pavilion are likewise grouped around an internal courtyard. In contrast to the open walkways, here the passageways are enclosed within the building and separated from the outdoor courtyard by room-high glazing. The pathways and access routes between the individual pavilions follow the pattern of covered walkways and incorporate ‘islands’ for working outdoors.
