The Duration Chamber
Temporary Installation at Design House 2015 (Design Week Mexico).
The Duration Chamber is a temporary installation that occupied the ventilation shaft of an old Mexico City apartment building to create a space dedicated to being, the idea of waiting and to contemplation. The design focused on designing the “void” in which the main players become the sky, the light and the spectators to generate a phenomena experienced through their “duration” within the space.
The vertical axis and perspective are emphasized with the use of black metallic sheets that give place to a suspended cube fabricated with anodized aluminum panels that reflect the sky light into the space, marking the passing of time through the shadows embedded in a series of ridges selectively located given the movement of the sun. The space provides the sky with a contour and frames infinite amount of diverse moments of blues, clouds and light. All of the materials used express their inherent character and raw properties.
The spectators are invited to lay down and adopt a position that enhances rest, contemplation thus finding an escape from the fast-pace routine life of the city and an opportunity to dedicate an undetermined amount of time to last in a moment. The project is also relevant given the sum of forces and collaboration that took place.
