A Multisensorial Journey in the Burial of Saint Lucy
A Multisensorial Journey in the Burial of Saint Lucy is a pilot project implemented in Siracusa and presented to the public in June 2015 at the Galleria Regionale di Palazzo Bellomo.
The installation offers an original re-visitation of Caravaggio’s painting and an emotional reading of his work of art through narrative text, music, images, sound, olfactory stimuli and tactile supports: a virtual journey into the story of Lucia and her time that allows a full immersion in the atmosphere of the painting.
The floor of the room hosting the installation A Multisensorial Journey in the Burial of Saint Lucy is covered with black linoleum to delimit the space for the visitors.
For the realization of the multimedia installation construction sites materials have been chosen: they are rough and their texture is meant to exalt the atmosphere of the painting.
The tridimensional element that holds the screen for the retro-projections is made of steel. A tulle drape completes the frame to evoke the grain of the original canvas of the painting, which is in a bad state of conservation, and to emphasize the depth of the figures magnifying the empathic character of the installation.
In the video, the theatrical space technique gives life to the evocative images of the painting and transforms them into an original narration. The voices of the characters, that are liberated from their bidemensional restraints and emerge from the background of the painting, unveil their personal vicissitudes and tell the story of Saint Lucy to the audience.
The information panels that introduce the visitors to the work are fixed on black osb totems.
The installation is the result of one year of work. The concept was developed by IAN – Innovative Art Network and proposed to the Galleria Regionale di Palazzo Bellomo, who embraced it and allowed its pilot testing.
The project was carried out in collaboration with different actors specialized in museum management and curatorship, culture, multimedia graphics and communication, as well as in partnership with a number of associations supporting persons with disabilities and promoting accessible tourism.
