Subway Station Westfriedhof
The decisive design element in the subway station Westfriedhof are the rough surfaces of the tunnel walls, the result of concrete cast in an earthen formwork, and the sharp contrast to the precisely fabricated interior build out of the station.
The lighting concept developed by Ingo Maurer, further emphasizes these contrasting elements, by utilizing colorful "light domes" located above the station platform and seemingly mystical, and subdued blue light in the tunnel construction.
The service counter areas located at the mezzanine level mediate, with their red stucco surfaces, between the worlds above and below grade level.
Lighting for the platform and the Park&Ride area are designed by Ingo Maurer.
Over the platform eleven aluminium domes, diameter 380 cm, were placed; their inner surfaces are lacquered in yellow, red and blue. Blue light above the domes paint ceiling and walls in a magic light.
