Freundschaftsinsel Potsdam
Side by side to the historic centre of Potsdam, lies the green island “Freundschaftsinsel” (Island of Friendship”), defined by the junction of two arms of the river Havel.
Today the island is one of the most popular parks within the historic parkland of Potsdam. In 2006 our design proposal for a new entrance of the park, was given the first prize, after an international competition.
The new entrance zone of the park opens up with a little plaza at the upper level of the park. Slender terraces modeling the height offset of the different levels of the park. Where once was a steep slope is now space for picnic, sunbathing or just sitting and enjoying the view over the lower landscape park. It was an essential point that changes within the historic settings are kept to a minimum. Minimal, simple but clearly recognizable are the concrete stripes with form the terraces within the lawn. Dancing trees within the park crossing the bridge and connecting the small but separated tip of the island with the main park.
Boardwalks along riparian zone on both sides the connecting both on water level.
