Mugombwa Refugee Camp Pre-Primary
The proposal for a new Pre-Primary school in Mugombwa - Gisara district - is part of a series of pilot projects that aim to set a standard for Education Facilities inside Refugee Camps across Rwanda.
Economic feasibility and sustainable architectonical solutions are the main features characterising the complex of buildings.
The overall dimensions of the rooms are the same, but modifications are introduced by placing a clearstory window in the metal roof section in order to increase daylight in the space. Also a covered open space is placed between every second classroom in order to provide for sheltered outdoor teaching place. Furthermore, all spaces are eventually connected by the exterior porch.
The RC load bearing structure ensures safety against hazards, meanwhile elevations are easily constructed by using cement blocks . The interior reed ceiling provides aesthetic quality to the space improving the acoustic and climatic comfort while the roof skylight allows for enough daylight.
The compound is thought of as self-enclosed fenced block, with three blocks of four classrooms each, two covered spaces per block, two toilet blocks and a kitchen.
