Kunstgewerbemuseum
KUEHN MALVEZZI converted the building designed by Rolf Gutbrod in 1967 taking a minimalist approach, informed by rationality and precision. The solution relies on the interplay between inside and outside, a clearly structured service area in the entrance foyer, an open course through the redesigned fashion, design, and art nouveau departments organized by spaces within spaces, the deliberate staging of exhibits, as well as an easy-to-grasp guidance and information system. On two of its altogether four floors, the reopened Kunstgewerbemuseum offers a systematic survey of the masterpieces of European design and object art from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance and the Baroque era to Rococo and Art Deco. A special new level is dedicated to classical design. Visitors will moreover find an also newly furnished fashion gallery with a comprehensive array of costumes and accessories from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. The redesign lends the Kunstgewerbemuseum a present-day orientation that does justice to both the high-quality exhibits and the requirements of a modern museum in operation.
