Fuchun Kosa Zou Ma Lou
This Zou ma lou is a typical Chinese Huizhou courtyard house sitting near a dock ,the client want to turn this old vernacular residence into a reception hall equipped with a gallery bar.
The two-story house is of modest size, while the enclosed courtyard is rather spacious and decent, surrounded with richly carved wood beams. To make best use of this spatial and decoration feature, a fantastic transparent umbrella structure is employed to shelter the center yard, where people cannow relax on sofas without worrying about the changing weather.
This is an independent bamboo structure covered with Polyurethane films, part of which can be opened to receive the sunlight and fresh air. This technical intervention successfully solved all challenges including air conditioning, rain collecting, daylighting and ventilation.
Through this project, we highlight our design philosophy that historical buildings should be put into everyday use instead of being adored as a shrine. Only in this way, they can achieve their full value with building emotional connections with the contemporary users.
