Sacred Monsters in Amphitheatre
Sacred Monsters for Akram Khan and Sylvie Guillem
The second version of the scenography was designed this time for the amphitheatres and summer festivals of Lyon (Les Nuits de Fourviere, Roman Fourvière Amphitheatre), Barcelona (Barcelona Grec Festival, Teatre Grec) and Athens (Athens Festival, Herod Atticus Theater). The challenge was to adapt the original design to protect dancers from the strong wind and give a large scale environmental scenography.
By creating again an imaginary sacred space, the design follows the original version, however the volume on the stage is transformed. In this version, the two large scale curved lines stand on the floor, wrapping around the musicians and providing a wall to hide the dancers. The strong reflection of light on the white walls and stage floor allows the audience to clearly see every one of the dancers' movements in the vast amphitheatres during the summer nights.
