Mobile Art Library
With the architectonical proposal for the ‘A47’ we wanted to create something more than just a library on wheels. Since the traditional arrangements of books on shelving units would render the relatively small platform surface of the truck inflexible and would block the visual relationships throughout it, the collection of books was raised to higher level. Hereby a transparent and dynamic space was created: an open platform that allows an infinite number of configurations and activities for workshops, lectures, screenings, book presentations and readings.
The books are thus safely stored below the opaque roof of the truck, forming a colorful cornice that gives the interior space its character and identity. The elevation of the mobile floor platforms controls the accessibility of the books and allows a whole series of different configurations according to the activities hosted in the library truck.
From the inside, the rhythm of metal columns and open trusses define a 3-dimensional structural grid in which up to 1500 books are stored into removable trays. The 26 doors that delimit the exterior perimeter, generate a dynamic connection between interior and the urban context and open up the truck us much as possible to its users and visitors. From the outside one sees an open and transparent filigree volume that carries a closed, opaque and heavy volume on top.
