UMBRELLA:
Value of the scenery is made by match between two objects. Our attempt to new match an artifact to the nature makes us feel another beauty different than idyllic scenery. We think deliberately relationship between new building and topography. Existing gymnasium is situated on the hill. We propose the roof as a minimal architectural gesture like as if put the Umbrella on the hill. We design the roof not a volume. This is our attitude toward architecture on this site.
IN-BETWEEN SPACE:
Defining the relationship between each other is a concept of this building, not making a shape. At first, put the Roof on the slope through upper level to lower level. Then set the program(gymnasium) at the lower level and establish stand following the slope. Façade of the building at the lower level provides new city-scape. Stand that following the slope meets the park at the upper level. Finally, street(city) is connected with the park(nature) through this in-between space. This Roof should be an in-between space like canopy, that is to say a ‘semi-outdoor space’.
WOODEN STRUCTURE:
Wood, which is very friendly, makes cozy atmosphere. And it is a sustainable material from the earth. The roof structure is designed as a square waffle-grid system of interlocking, Glued-Laminated timber fastened with steel connectors. Span of the two-directional grid structure is 6m x 6m. This roof grid consists of 20cm thick and 1.8m high wooden structure modules. The space composed of continuous linear structure(post and beam) is too simple, but it has a rhythm.
