The green color of the grass and the gray color from the mountains. The white color of the sky and snow. Red, yellow and purple and all the colors of the rainbow.
The house is designed for the needs of the children and the staff that care for them. It is like the house grows with the individual. It embraces the smallest and most fragile and supports those that are bigger and stronger. The spaces in the building do not only support the body but also the soal. The soal that is not so clearly visable, that is searching, asking, thinking and creating. Here the parent´s expectations to the school regarding the safety and well being of their children is of the upmost importance.
The acoustics played a big role in the implementation as well as the light from the large windows and skylights. Why does the fence need to be straight and flat? Why can it not be different and creative? Why does the floor need to be straight? The earth isn’t straight. Why does everything need to be white? The world isn’t white. We took on the mind of a child and imagined a world where the sky is pink and the sun is green.
The building combines the reality of the children and the parents. The dressing area is not only a place to change clothes. It can be difficult to say goodbye to mom and dad in the morning and there are so many things to tell them in the afternoon. It is a space for being sad and happy, a place for activity and indipendence. A space where the day begins and the storytelling begins.
The school has different areas for children of different ages. Departments are separated although linked together with a long hallway, which opens up the space to the south with tall windows. But the building also combines and promotes interaction between the different areas. Each age group has their own space but it is also easy for the younger children to learn from the older ones and for the older children to help and support the younger ones. This strengthens the connection between the children.
The work done inside the building merges with the work done outside. The exterior space is not only a place to play but also to explore, discover, invent. These are good ways to combine with the education and make it even more exciting. This is also the perfect place to create works of art, build and create. A covered veranda surrounds three sides of the building. Below the veranda there is a hill and all sorts of rides, fast lane and other toys that stimulate the children.
