The school is intertwined with the landscape, the building grows out of the land and creates a shelter from the wind where the children plays. The school is a landscape, a landscape to experience, learn and create. A landscape which gives multiple possibilities for experiences. The students and teachers can travel through the school in smaller or bigger groups and find a place for every occasion accordingly.
The weather conditions in Iceland are quite harsh. In order to allow for outdoor teaching the school had to be designed in such way that wind and rain would affect it. Therefore we designed huge verandas and overhangs facing the south so that either the rain nor the sun would disrupt both the play and the teaching inside and outside. The landscape was also formed in such way to accommodate different activities and teaching. Everything was thought of as to teach the children both intentially and unintentially about the weather and the environment all year round.
The proposal was selected from 5 nominations in a closed competition. The school building was completed in January 2010. The Minister of Education, said the school and its policy should be a model for all other schools in Iceland.
