Campus Center Saarland University
The design concept for the student centre is based on the masterplanning for the campus undertaken by Veauthier between 2000-2002 on behalf of the university. The two storey building on the site of a former barracks serves both functionally and spatially as a new focal point for the campus. It integrates various advisory services, student work rooms, the international students’ office as well as retail spaces.
The building’s large front canopy symbolises 'residence' and 'protection' and consists of a transparent roof. Both its upper and lower surfaces are made of transparent polycarbonate-panels, which enable a daylight effect during the daytime, while transforming the building into an example of 'light architecture' at night through an integral lighting installation. The vertical elements on the building's façade are laid out in a regular-irregular kinetic rhythm reminiscent of musical notation.
