The project reorganised and extended the ground floor of an existing end of terrace house in a rural conservation area. The single storey timber extension is conceived in response to the existing house and the wider location of South Gloucestershire, taking influence in both form and material from the vernacular ways of building in its semi rural context.
The extension provides new living, dining and kitchen facilities that are considered as part of the wider landscape, with the new structure reconnecting the heart of the house with the expansive front and rear gardens. The form of the structure and openings within it respond to orientation and are designed to introduce sunlight into different parts of the house in both summer and winter.
Simple economical building methods and materials were employed in a considered way to deliver the project to a modest budget.
