837 Gastropub
The history of gastropub (a bar and restaurant that serves high-end beer and food) location itself, demanded to make specific interior design decisions. It is located in Rotuses square, in the heart of Kaunas city oldtown by the Communication History Museum. The museum is housed in the former 19th century postal buildings. In 1825 a Mail Department was set up there with a post office, mail coaches, stables and lodging rooms for passengers. We were asked to design a interior for a gastropub and we decided to go with a cozy, warm environment.
New vs. old .
The interior itself is modern and new, but we left some of the old details, just to remind of all the history that happened there: like the authentic wired telephone or the old telephone wires that hang by the ceiling.
We used minimalistic, dark, but yet warm toned furniture, which were revived for a new life, that remind you of stables or the old pubs of the 19th century.
The floor, bar and stools are wooden and tables with chairs on the contrary - are light and modern.
We created different emotions in bar areas through different lighting options: natural - through the window, white - from the ceiling and the shelves, yellow - above the pictures on the wall.
But the main focus is the people. The space was designed to communicate, share, enjoy and live. The bar can be used as DJ booth, because the music is as important as food or a glass of wine in this place.
The walls are dedicated to world’s photography. The wall’s purpose is to exhibit the photographs of world travelling, different artists.
Currently one can appreciate the works of Ignas Maldžiūnas from the festival Burning Man in America.
The space inside the bar can easily be transformed into what people need, whether it’s a small of big gathering of people. The space functions during day and night, summer and winter and already has become a popular and trendy meeting spot amongst Kaunas’s dwellers and tourists.
