The KUNSTHALLE wien has a rectangular floor plan measuring 22 x 57 meters. The smaller hall on the ground floor measures about 500 square meters while the large, basket-arched hall on the upper floor measures about 1,000 square meters. The levels are connected with each other through two striking, freestanding staircases. The recessed consoles form galleries inside. On the lower floors are the multimedia room, dressing rooms, storage areas, and utilities. An underground passage connects to the offices in the Oval Wing.
The exhibition spaces are equipped with a sophisticated and flexible artificial lighting system. There is no daylight. Only the narrow slits over the consoles provide a limited reference to the outside world.
Materials Used:
Clinker brick for the facade and roof and walls and floor in the foyer; woodblock parquet for the floors in the two halls; brushed stainless steel for all visible metal parts.
