How can the demand for fitting a large extension into a building complex with a distinct architectural language be combined with the wish to make a recognisable and contemporary building?
SeARCH searched for an extension with a clear architectural presence that fits in the existing building complex without literally adopting the formal language of the existing organic architecture. A contemporary extension that connects with the spatial qualities of the existing building and in one move resolves the shortage of class rooms, the technical deficiencies and the logistical problems of the whole complex.
By moving the entrance to the street side and introducing a stepped schoolyard between the street and the first floor the building gets a more natural connection with the public area. The stepped square functions as a transition zone between public outside and private inside.
Supported by two rows of zigzagged colums, on top of the transparent entrance level a wood clad volume houses the class rooms. The cantilever over the stair shelters the outdoor space and facilitates two stepped classrooms. The top floor with large studio style class rooms accommodate painting, music and textile classes under a shed roof with northern light.
